Sansum Diabetes Research Institute is at the forefront of diabetes research, education, and care. The Institute was founded in 1944 by Dr. William Sansum, the first US physician to manufacture and administer insulin. In 2019, Sansum Diabetes Research will roll out a successful pilot program with food as medicine in their Farming For Life program, begin a first-of-its-kind study using the artificial pancreas with pregnant women, and continue ground-breaking research in the causes for type 2 diabetes – all while celebrating 75 years spent earning a global reputation for improving the lives of those impacted by diabetes.
A healthy diet and exercise program is essential in helping to prevent or manage diabetes. Staying fit and active throughout your life has many benefits, but the biggest one for people with diabetes is this: it helps you control diabetes and prevent long-term complications. Exercise makes it easier to control your blood glucose (blood sugar) level. Exercise benefits people with type 1 because it increases your insulin sensitivity. For someone with type 2 diabetes, physical activity is an important component of a treatment plan. It’s also important to have a healthy meal plan and maintain blood glucose levels through medications or insulin, if necessary.
