Busting Through that Dreaded Post Workout Soreness

Dr. Ryan Rogers

For many of us that workout it is not uncommon to have had that muscle soreness and muscle fatigue that follows a day or two after the workout. Many of us chalk it up to what is to be expected after a good hard workout, it’s that buildup of lactic acid that is caused by muscle damage and the repair that is being done to those damaged muscles. But that muscle soreness and fatigue can be a hindrance as well, we’re less likely to workout those muscles that are sore and worn out, until they feel like they are capable of handling another good intense workout. For some people that delay can be 1-2 days and for others it can be 3-5 days, which means that there is, at a minimum, a 2-4 day delay before those sore and fatigued muscles are used again. And let’s be honest sore muscles are not fun, have you ever tried to use the toilet after a hard leg workout day?

There is hope in combating that muscle soreness and fatigue. One sup plement that has be gaining recognition in the past few years in helping combat that post workout soreness and fatigue. That supplement is Branched-Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs for short). What are BCAAs? BCAAs are essential amino acids, more specifically valine, leucine and isoleucine. Amino acids are the basic building blocks of proteins, think chicken, fish, eggs, beans, and legumes. BCAAs are the only amino acids that are metabolized in skeletal muscles. Therefore they speed up the muscle recovery process by decreasing exercise-induced muscle damage and promote muscle-protein synthesis. That is why BCAAs are often recommended to help repair damaged muscles, decrease muscle soreness and increase muscle function.
